Utilisation of cover crops: implications for conservation agriculture systems in a mediterranean climate region of South Africa

چکیده

Cover crops can provide multiple agroecosystem services to produced in conservation agriculture systems. South African grain producers the Mediterranean climate region are reluctant integrate cover rainfed systems since replace cash leading financial losses. Using as fodder help input costs, while providing a range of advantageous cropping system. The aim this study was investigate how crop mixtures and utilisation affect soil quality, quality quantity mulch well wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) subsequent year. A two-year conducted Western Cape Province Africa. In Year 1, diverse legume cereal-based were partially grazed, cut material removed for haymaking, or left unutilised mulch. 2, spring planted effects method on yield. used hay grazing did not (P < 0.05) yield that followed rotation. Legume-based increased protein content regardless method. Soil nitrogen improved when grazed. be by an important agronomic tactic improve system productivity support sustainable intensification

Cover Crops and Fertilization Alter Nitrogen Loss in Organic and Conventional Conservation Agriculture Systems

Agroecosystem nitrogen (N) loss produces greenhouse gases, induces eutrophication, and is costly for farmers; therefore, conservation agricultural management practices aimed at reducing N loss are increasingly adopted. However, the ecosystem consequences of these practices have not been well-studied. We quantified N loss via leaching, NH3 volatilization, N2O emissions, and N retention in plant ...

New roller crimper concepts for mechanical termination of cover crops in conservation agriculture

Rollers crimpers have been used in conservation agriculture to terminate cover crops; however, excessive vibration generated by the original straight-bar roller design has delayed adoption of this technology in the United States. To avoid excessive vibration, producers generally reduce operating speeds that increase the time needed to perform the field operation. The objectives of this research...

Climate Change and Projected Impacts in Agriculture: an Example on Mediterranean Crops

Recently, the availability of multi-model ensemble prediction methods has permitted the assignment of likelihoods to future climate projections. This allowed moving from the scenario-based approach to the risk-based approach in assessing the effects of climate change, thus providing more useful information for decision-makers that, as reported by Schneider (2001), need probability estimates to ...
